Occupying the top spots in Google

12/31/2008

To become an authority site in Google’s eyes is something you have to earn.

It’s not possible to cheat, you can’t just wake up one day and decide to dominate Google listings in your area. I’ve been making some pretty bold  claims on my blogs then backing them up, some better than others.

Having Google view your collection of websites as THE authority on your area is exactly like taking the high ground and putting YOUR artillery on it.

I was just watching cable and caught a glimpse of a show about Napoleon. Apparently when Napoleon was a junior officer during the French Revolution the British trying to move in on a French port, to capitalize on France’s political instability.

Napoleon recognized that his Generals were incorrect about how best to go about prosecuting the defense of that French port city. The generals wanted to make a tried and true full frontal assault (which would have resulted in thousands of casualties).

Napoleon surveyed the situation, immediately recognized that the Brits wanted the port, not the city. So he put artillery on the high ground overlooking the port.  Needless to say the Brits left as soon as they saw their ships were defenseless.

Frederick Businesses need someone to occupy the high ground defending Frederick’s “port”.

Google is that high ground.

I boldly claimed that I’d grab all the top spots in Google for my clients, some I did outstanding, some pretty good, others are “knocking at the door” to a top ten spot. Here’s my report card for Fall 2008.

More and more people are going on line to find a moving company

…with mixed results. It seems that the Search Engine Marketing Skills of a few savvy webmasters are out-performing legitimate moving companies in the search engine results pages.

Google ”Move to Frederick Maryland” into Google and the majority of the listings Google returns are NOT moving companies.

What shows up at nearly all of the top organic listings are so called “Moving Company Directories”. The highly skilled in Search Engine Optimization (SEO webmasters are staking out the keywords people search for in every city and town in the US.

Moving Directories resutls for Movers in Frederick Maryland

The business model these directories use is to earn a fee for enticing people to request a “moving quote” which nets the webmaster a commission. Alternatively an enterprising webmaster can add Google Adsense ads to the site netting a tidy side income for the webmaster’s efforts.

The enterprising entrepreneurs typically do not give a hoot if the moving company you select is reputable or not, the owners of such directory sites often don’t even live in the US.

Google claims to be weeding out such “junk sites” but there are some in the online advertising community who are second guessing that Google might just look the other way considering the huge volume of advertising revenue the Big G is earning from the ads.

The SEO moving directories are so highly skilled in their craft that the average small business Moving Company owner can not afford to hire a webmaster with enough SEO skills to unseat the juggernauts top rankings in Google.
What makes this site any different than the aforementioned SEO directories?

The business model.

123movers.com has most of the top spots… until now

What Frederick Web Promotions is doing right here… you found this top site in at the top of Google™ didn’t you?

The Business Model for this blog is as follows:

Virtually all of the top listings in Google™ for the highly competitive keyword phrases that a Frederick Maryland Moving Company would want to be found under are dominated by Moving Quote Directories.

The top spots are always taken by these directories, most of them are making money by the little ads everywhere. They *might* get lucky and get a moving company to pay for inclusion, but they really don’t care what content is on the page as long as it has the top spot in Google™ and the resultant high volume of web traffic.

They’ll make more money from the ads than they will for having a moving company or real estate agent or mortgage broker pay for the right to advertise.

Fair enough, that’s Free Enterprise, those guys are top notch search engine optimization wizards, just like me. They know full well how to get a top spot for ANY keyword… and the companies that DO decide to pay for ad spots?

Their ads are not exclusive, there may be a dozen competing moving companies all jammed together. Doesn’t do too much good for a smaller moving company for it’s listing to be sandwiched between 2 giant van line firms, does it?

So what makes this site different?
