Moving? How to Create a Stress-Free Move Day

On the lists of stress-inducing events, moving is usually one of the highest, with move day being the climax. But it doesn’t have to be that way. There are two categories of needs that occur during move day. The first encompasses transactional needs, the types of activities that you find on checklists. The second category comprises emotional need. Finding solutions for emotional needs is often more complex. By planning and anticipating both types of needs, you can reduce stress on move day and create a smooth, positive experience.

What’s the secret to planning and implementing stress-free moves? Start with the big picture; everything else is small stuff.

Be a Traffic Cop

Moving day often makes people feel like they are the hub of a wheel, with spokes coming at them from all directions. Move-day planning can help. Develop a floor plan and post it on the front door of your new home so movers can place furniture without constantly having to ask you questions. Take photographs of how items are arranged in china closets and on shelves so other people can help with unpacking. Use Do Not Pack and Open Me First checklists to keep track of things you’ll need the night before and day of moving. Delegating to others doesn’t mean that you are not in charge; it means that you have selected things that others can accomplish, and you can concentrate on tasks that only you can do.

Unpack Strategically

A second key to a stress-free move day is doing “first-things” first. That means focusing efforts on tasks that must be done in order for you to stay overnight in your new home; things like setting up the bedroom, making your bed, unpacking toiletries and setting up lamps so you have light. Don’t tackle the china closets, kitchen and office until after the bedroom is set up.

Tip #1: Unpack the bedroom first so you won’t be in the movers’ way when they unload additional furniture.

Tip #2: Ask the mover to load your bedroom furniture and clothing last, so it comes off the truck first.

Tip #3: Focus on one room at a time and get it completely settled before moving on. This way you’ll have space that is organized and carton-free, even if other rooms still need to be unpacked.

Prioritize Yourself

The most important need, however, is taking care of yourself. This means stopping work at a reasonable hour—say six in the evening—before you exhaust yourself or hurt your back. Plan on a casual meal out, come back to your unpacked and organized bedroom, and go to bed. The cartons that remain will be there for you the next day, or the day after that.

Give yourself permission to not accomplish everything at once. Patience and understanding go a long way in reducing stress. Recognize that your spouse’s bad mood is not about you; it’s about how he is feeling. Stress can affect memory too, so don’t panic if you can’t remember your new phone number or your daughter’s address; you’ll be fine next week. Lastly, give yourself time to feel at home. You have probably spent months preparing for and anticipating your move; move day can seem disappointing or anticlimactic. The best part about move day is, it ends, and then you are ready to start life in your new home.

Helpful Hints

Create a Do Not Pack area the day before the move for everything you are likely to need the next day. Include items from three categories:

  1. Clothing, towels and toiletries
  2. Personal items such as keys, wallet, checkbook, cell phone (and charger) and all prescription medication
  3. Miscellaneous items which are easily lost, such as the TV remote and the key to the china closet

Make an Open Me First box for items such as towels and bedding, telephones, clock radio, toilet paper, trash bags, snack food, paper plates and a coffee or tea pot (plus filters!).

Is Frederick safe? Crime?

My ex and I moved up to Frederick after college to raise kids and it is a great area. There’s lots to do, parks, hiking, minor league baseball, arts, history, shopping, great dining and nightlife too. I’ve been here over twenty years now and never had a problem with crime. Now that I’m single I am out and about downtown all the time. It’s a really great downtown and reminds me of Annapolis, Fells Point or Old Town Alexandria. Just like those places, you want to be safe and know where not to go, but again, I’ve never had a problem. The area around Baker Park is especially nice. Carroll Creek is an up and coming area, but with all the condos it’s probably more geared for singles. Generally the police are great. I had one incident with a dyke police woman that, well, we had a personality clash. But that is the exception and most of the officers have been friendly, respectful and often you even see the Chief of Police out walking the streets. The town is growing but still has a bit of the Mayberry feel to it. Don’t plan to drink and drive though, as police officers are all over the place after midnight on weekends. Steer away from South Street, Hillcrest and Heather Ridge areas, but otherwise you should feel safe where ever you go.

Now you can check to see if the mover you’re interesting in hiring has any complaints… easily online!

    Avoiding moving scams

Moving company scams can cost you a lot of money and spoil the excitement of getting a new home, so know what you can do to protect yourself.

Moving can be one of the most stressful times in your life. There are usually a great deal of memories and a considerable amount of money at stake, so the last thing you want to deal with is getting scammed. Here are some tips to follow so you can avoid getting ripped off when you move from one home to the next.

    Check references

If you heard of a moving company from your real estate agent, chances are his or her other clients have used the same service and have been pleased. You may also want to ask for references directly from the company so you can see how satisfied other customers have been with the movers. If you are unsure about a certain moving company, it may be a good idea to check into your local chamber of commerce, as well as a community organization that specializes in relocation to see if there have been any complaints or reports of moving company scams. Another good resource is your local police department. An officer should be able tell you about any recent scams or what to look out for when contracting a mover to transport your belongings.

    Be cautious

If you have found a moving company that you are interested in contracting for your move, here are a few things to consider: Do they give a local address? Did they give you an estimate for moving over the phone? Does the company require a large deposit? Are there company vehicles or generic rented trucks? All of these things can be red flags! Reputable moving companies should be able to give a local address and phone number, and your estimate should be given once a representative of the company has seen the size and the amount of furniture you have. You should also try to avoid paying movers until the move has been completed and the company should have their own vehicles with company logos, rather than trucks rented from another company. Another good idea is to look into licensure and insurance information, as well as consumer advocacy groups before you contract a company for your move.

    Know your rights

If you feel you have been scammed, ripped off or treated unfairly by a moving company it is your right to react appropriately. A good place to start is with your local police department and chamber of commerce. It is also a good idea to report any scams or unsatisfactory activity to the Department of Transportation by calling 1-888-DOT-SAFT. Doing so can help recover your money or your belongings, as well as help protect other consumers from moving scams. Published on January 30, 2007

$15,000 worth of MD home buying help

Frederick Maryland Mortgage Help Relocate to Frederick

It could be a good time to buy new digs. The Senate yesterday passed a new home buyer tax credit allotting buyers up to $15,000 in tax credits. The New York Times reports:

The Senate on Wednesday voted to expand the economic stimulus package with a tax credit for homebuyers of up to $15,000, a provision championed by Republicans as addressing a root cause of the recession.

If you’ve just stumbled onto this RSS feed and remember to subscribe to Frederick Maryland Moving via Email to ensure you can enjoy the latest post(s).

The tax break for homebuyers, which the Senate approved by voice vote without opposition, was the second amendment in two days intended to encourage consumers to make major purchases. The tax credit would give buyers 10 percent of the price of a primary residence bought within one year, up to $15,000, and is intended to stabilize plummeting home prices, which caused a wave of foreclosures and led to the near collapse of the financial system as Wall Street firms wrote down billions in mortgage-backed assets.

With Wednesday’s additions, the cost of the Senate package has climbed well above $900 billion — the limit that Mr. Obama has set for the final legislation. Intense negotiations seemed likely over how to reduce the price tag.

Times are good for people with money to spare.

Occupying the top spots in Google

    12/31/2008

To become an authority site in Google’s eyes is something you have to earn.

It’s not possible to cheat, you can’t just wake up one day and decide to dominate Google listings in your area. I’ve been making some pretty bold  claims on my blogs then backing them up, some better than others.

Having Google view your collection of websites as THE authority on your area is exactly like taking the high ground and putting YOUR artillery on it.

I was just watching cable and caught a glimpse of a show about Napoleon. Apparently when Napoleon was a junior officer during the French Revolution the British trying to move in on a French port, to capitalize on France’s political instability.

Napoleon recognized that his Generals were incorrect about how best to go about prosecuting the defense of that French port city. The generals wanted to make a tried and true full frontal assault (which would have resulted in thousands of casualties).

Napoleon surveyed the situation, immediately recognized that the Brits wanted the port, not the city. So he put artillery on the high ground overlooking the port.  Needless to say the Brits left as soon as they saw their ships were defenseless.

Frederick Businesses need someone to occupy the high ground defending Frederick’s “port”.

    Google is that high ground.

I boldly claimed that I’d grab all the top spots in Google for my clients, some I did outstanding, some pretty good, others are “knocking at the door” to a top ten spot. Here’s my report card for Fall 2008.

    keyword phrase:

    What do you think?

Why are they moving to Frederick?

    12/31/2008

Moving to Frederick Maryland just make sense from an investment point of view.

According to Fortune Magazine Washington DC is slated to be #10 on the list of 10 biggest  home value losers of next year.  From Yahoo Finance:

    10. Washington, D.C.

    2008 median house price: $343,160

    2009 projected change: -19.9%

    2010 projected change: -5.7%

A new administration means a changing of the guard. It also is going to mean an increase in hiring for the DC areas federal government contractors.

Republican aides and republican lobbyists moving into DC will benefit from the falling house prices. Montgomery county is one of the few places in the entire US where property values actually went up.  Where are the new employees coming to fill the jobs at the various government contractors going to move to when they find out how much it costs to live in Montgomery County?

Moving to neighboring Frederick Maryland is going to look very, very attractive to those freshly hired wizkids filling the ranks of Federal Contractors.

Average listing price in Frederick, MD went up 0.13% to $330,305 from last week

    FDIC securities loosen up credit

    12/26/2008

Most people relocate to a new area for better employment opportunities. Who wants to commute 2 hours a day? Relocating to get a better job means buying a home.

If people cant get a mortgage, it puts a severe damper on relocating.

The collapse of the credit market fed the housing bubble burst…

The FDIC has, since early in 2008 undertaken numerous innovative programs to ease the fall for most Americans. According to http://mortgageloan.com this new program: Temporary Liquidity Guarantee Program looks like the one to turn things around for mortgage availability.

Early indications are that the TLGP is encouraging the return of normal, functioning credit markets. Goldman Sachs Group was the first to jump on the program, selling $5 billion worth of notes that will mature in 2012. Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, GE Capital, Citigroup, and SunTrust have also announced plans to participate. So far, investors have responded enthusiastically-showing a strong demand for safe investments that outperform the currently depressed yields of Treasury securities.

Can we say “Light at the end of the tunnel?”

Proximity to some of the hottest jobs in the US makes Frederick Maryland an ideal place to relocate to.  Every one wants to get a great job, Montgomery County’s Technology Corridor has many of them; take a look at Montgomery Counties Cost of Living and Frederick Maryland looks better and better.

    Merry Christmas Frederick:)

    Moving to Frederick Maryland

    12/25/2008

This is a Frederick Moving Company Website

…in search of a Frederick Maryland Moving Company

Before the first of the year this site will rank #1 in Google for the search term: Frederick Maryland Moving

    This site is for rent

The reason it’s so hard for a local Frederick Moving Company to rank in the top spots in Google is because the webmasters for the “moving quote directories” are more highly skilled in search engine optimization than the local web design firms are.  Every where in the country you do an online search for “movers” or “moving” what comes up is either 123movers.com or movers.com or some similar site. The business model these online directories use is to generate income from selling ad space on the sites and collecting a commission for people filling out moving quotes.

These on-line monster sites know that to rank in Google, you’ve got to have hundreds of words relating the the locality: Frederick History, Frederick Trivia, Frederick sports… The directory style sites typically have dozens, if not hundreds of pages on interesting facts, often simply copying publicly available yellowpages listings of local vendors.

Frederick Maryland Moving companies are hiring web design firms that do not have the SEO experience required to unseat these juggernauts from thier top spots in Google, additionally, a local business owner is not likely to see the value of adding trivia to his company site, believing that it’s not going to make them a sale.

Well, if your company site is not in the top ten, it’s not going to matter much what you put on your site because no one is going to see it anyway.

The only way to beat these sites is to beat them at their own game. Give Google what it wants and it will come back again and again, blessing the site with page rank due to the sites’ perceived relevance to the area.

If all moving companies are pretty much the same, and there is no discernible difference in offers, sales copy, sales pitches, price, features what have you… how is Google to determine who gets to be #1?

Well, this site is going to forcibly take that #1 spot in short order and it’s for rent to a local Frederick Maryland Moving Company.

…with mixed results. It seems that the Search Engine Marketing Skills of a few savvy webmasters are out-performing legitimate moving companies in the search engine results pages.

Google ”Move to Frederick Maryland” into Google and the majority of the listings Google returns are NOT moving companies.

What shows up at nearly all of the top organic listings are so called “Moving Company Directories”. The highly skilled in Search Engine Optimization (SEO webmasters are staking out the keywords people search for in every city and town in the US.

Moving Directories resutls for Movers in Frederick Maryland

The business model these directories use is to earn a fee for enticing people to request a “moving quote” which nets the webmaster a commission. Alternatively an enterprising webmaster can add Google Adsense ads to the site netting a tidy side income for the webmaster’s efforts.

The enterprising entrepreneurs typically do not give a hoot if the moving company you select is reputable or not, the owners of such directory sites often don’t even live in the US.

Google claims to be weeding out such “junk sites” but there are some in the online advertising community who are second guessing that Google might just look the other way considering the huge volume of advertising revenue the Big G is earning from the ads.

The SEO moving directories are so highly skilled in their craft that the average small business Moving Company owner can not afford to hire a webmaster with enough SEO skills to unseat the juggernauts top rankings in Google.
What makes this site any different than the aforementioned SEO directories?

    Relocating to Frederick Maryland

Gently Rolling Hills of Frederick Maryland

Gently Rolling Hills of Frederick Maryland

Looking at a map, Maryland is small, oddly shaped and squeezed between Pennsylvania and Virginia.

High up in the wooded Appalachians, Western Maryland has all the mountain trappings of West Virginia. Closer to sea level, crab boats bob in the Chesapeake, evoking a stately Southern feel. Near Virginia, Southern Maryland is a wash of suburbs surrounding Washington D.C.

    Civil War Facts about Maryland:

62,000 Marylanders fought for the North and 22,000 fought for the South.

More casualties occured in Sharpsburg in a single day then in the entire history of the US Military… this includes D Day in WW2!

Since then, the long march of Irish, German, Hungarian, Scandinavian and Russian immigrants through the Port of Baltimore and steady flow of African-Americans from Southern States has made Maryland a state where stereotypes and assumptions are as fragile as a steamed crab’s shell.

Now that you’re moving to Maryland, there are a few facts you’ll want to keep in mind:

As of 2007, Maryland is home to 5,618,344 people – which makes it the 19th most populous state in America but it’s only the 42nd largest.

Maryland’s official state sport is jousting.

Maryland’s state house, in Annapolis (the state capital), has the largest all wood dome in the U.S. It’s topped by a sculpture of an acorn (a symbol of wisdom which is, ironically, installed upside down).

In Maryland it’s to sell chicks or ducklings to a minor within one week of Easter??

Maryland’s state song is “Maryland, My Maryland,” sung to the melody of “Oh Christmas Tree.”

Francis Scott Key, a Frederick Maryland resident wrote the “Star-Spangled Banner” in Baltimore, while watching the bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812.
